Founder and principal artist of Toronto’s chameleon pop/rock band blueVenus, Andrea de Boer’s voice has been described as “hypnotic” by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) Germany’s national newspaper. It’s a sultry blend of bluesy low notes that seamlessly swoops up into an ethereal timbre reminiscent of Feist. Andrea’s vocal style is as organic and heartfelt as the messages within her lyrics. Combining pop/rock, jazz, latin, and soul influences, Andrea creates a unique and memorable sound that’s all blueVenus.
blueVenus worked with JUNO award winner L. Stu Young (Prince) for its 2004 self-titled EP, which Germany’s Gitarre & Bass described as “one of the best… I have heard in a long time… perfect.” and received an honourable mention in the 2005 Billboard Song Contest for the single, “Get it Now.” blueVenus next worked with fellow JUNO award winner Matt DeMatteo (Big Wreck, Esthero, Mobile) for the debut full-length album, Grin, which was named a top 10 album by the CBC. blueVenus is currently in pre-production for her next album with DeMatteo, from which some of the new “Comfortably Numb” EP draws its songs.
A dynamic live act, blueVenus has performed in the US and Europe and a number of national musical festivals, including the 2013 North By North East Festival (NXNE), Cincinnati’s Midpoint Music Festival, and numerous appearances at Canadian Music Week (CMW). Musical appearances include Turkey’s Rock Istanbul Festival along with Garbage and Megadeth, as well as at the MidPoint Music Festival as one of the few international acts invited to the unique three-day event in Cincinnati, Ohio.
blueVenus has been recognized by their peers by reaching semi-finalist status at the 2011 Indie Week Music Festival artist competition. In addition, blueVenus has received many acknowledgments for her singing and songwriting talents, such as “Best Acoustic Act” and “Best Female Fronted Band” nominations at the Toronto Independent Music Awards.
In February and March 2014, blueVenus (featuring Canadian guitarist Jessica Stuart of the Jessica Stuart Few) will be traveling to Australia to team up with Polish-born, Australian-raised troubadour Marta Pacek (www.martapacek.com) for their double release Australian tour, with multiple shows in Melbourne and Sydney, and going as far north as Tamworth.
Both artists will be promoting new releases: Marta with her album “Voodoo Dolls and False Alarms” produced by Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thomson), and blueVenus with her five-song, mixed-tape-style EP “Comfortably Numb” including the latest demos, “Cannibal” and “Numb,” which will be part of the full-length album currently in pre-production with Matt DeMatteo.
As well as working on her sophomore album, blueVenus is in her third year performing a weekly residency at Toronto’s Castro’s Lounge.
